Character.AI alternatives: which one depends on why you're leaving
Three completely different complaints send people looking for a replacement — the filter, the queues, and the memory. They have three different answers, and one of them is "stay and pay $9.99." Every list we found skips that question and goes straight to recommending whatever pays them.
First: which problem do you actually have?
Character.AI's own App Store reviews — 4.3 out of 5 from roughly 555,000 ratings, so a very large sample — cluster into a small number of recurring complaints. Find yours here, then read only that section.

If the filter is your problem: Janitor AI
This is the most common complaint by a wide margin. Reviewers report Character.AI refusing entirely innocuous interactions — one specifically cites hugging. The filter is not calibrated to block adult content; it is calibrated well short of it.
Janitor AI is the direct answer. Unfiltered, free, and the fastest-growing platform in the category at 143.1 million monthly visits, up 12.86% month over month. Average visit length is 18 minutes 10 seconds, which suggests people who make it through setup stay.
The platform ships its own model (JanitorLLM) but good output usually means connecting an external model through what Janitor calls a proxy — an API key from a provider like OpenRouter. Documented options include DeepSeek Chat v3, DeepSeek R1 and Microsoft MAI-DS-R1.
The clearest evidence this is fiddly: Janitor publishes a multi-part beginner's guide to configuring it. Products don't write long beginner's guides for easy things.
The $10 tip that matters: OpenRouter's free tier allows 50 requests a day, rising to 1,000 a day once you have purchased $10 in credits at any point. That threshold counts credits bought all-time, not credits remaining. Buy $10 once, keep the higher limit forever, and you don't have to spend it.
NO ENTITY DISCLOSED Janitor AI publishes no company name, no registration, no jurisdiction. Character.AI is Character Technologies, Inc. of Menlo Park — a named US corporation. You are trading an accountable operator for an unfiltered one.
Practical mitigation: set the OpenRouter proxy up anyway. It puts a named, accountable company in the processing path instead of nobody, and it improves your output. Full assessment here.
If queues and ads are your problem: don't leave
This one is worth saying plainly because no affiliate site will: if your complaint is waiting, the fix is Character.AI's own paid tier, and we earn nothing from telling you that.
The queue complaints are real and severe. One reviewer documented waits escalating from three minutes to twelve, then to roughly fifty-three, then past two hours at peak. Another summarised the free experience as "only a hour to chat is a bit crazy."
$9.99/month or $94.99/year removes the queue and the ads. There is also a cheaper "Lite" tier at $2.49 and $4.99.
The paid tier fixes queues and ads. It does not touch the content filter. If you pay expecting the filter to loosen, you will be disappointed and you will have paid for it. Filter frustration and queue frustration are different problems with different prices.
If memory is your problem: Nomi.ai
Characters losing context and falling into repetitive phrasing over long conversations is the third recurring theme. Nomi is the app the enthusiast community points to for this, and it holds the highest App Store rating in the category at 4.6 out of 5 — though from 2,700 ratings, a far smaller sample than Character.AI's 555,000.
$15.99/month, $39.99/quarter, or $99.99/year. Up to ten companions per account, group chats, voice with emotional tone variation, and proactive messaging.
VENDOR CLAIM Nomi markets itself as "the only AI with human-level long term memory." That is the company's own wording, and we found no independent benchmark testing it. The community reputation is genuine. The measurement does not exist. If perfect recall is your requirement, that gap should worry you slightly.

If you want a companion rather than roleplay: Candy.ai
Character.AI is fundamentally a character-roleplay platform — you talk to Sherlock Holmes or a character someone invented. Its near-even audience split of 51% male, 49% female is the tell: it is used for storytelling and company. If what you actually want is a persistent romantic companion with image generation, you are on the wrong kind of product.
Candy.ai at $47.88 a year is the cheapest serious answer to that question. Run by EverAI Limited, Malta, registration C107181. Accepts crypto, uses discreet billing descriptors.
The free tier is five messages per month. Not per day. You cannot evaluate anything with it — the $5.60 weekly plan is the real trial.
The refund window is 24 hours or 20 tokens, whichever runs out first, outside the EU and UK. Image generation spends tokens. You can lose refund eligibility in your first hour while testing the feature you paid for.
This is the one recommendation on this page that pays us. It is here because it answers a specific question the others don't, not because of the commission. Full review.
Apps we are not recommending, and why
- DreamGF — the annual plan advertises $69.99 and renews at $311.88. Every plan converges on $25.99/month once the intro term ends. The arithmetic is here.
- PolyBuzz — the $4.99 weekly plan annualises to roughly $259, and reviewers report ad spam every 10 to 50 messages.
- Replika — a €5,000,000 GDPR fine in April 2025, an unresolved FTC complaint, and App Store reviews dominated by memory loss. If memory is why you're leaving Character.AI, this is not the escape.
- CrushOn.AI, SpicyChat, Kupid AI — real scale, but we could not verify a single price for any of them. Their pricing pages render in JavaScript and returned nothing. We won't recommend what we can't check.
- Muah.AI — breached September 2024, 1.9 million accounts including prompts and stated fetishes, extortion attempts within three days, and still no breach notice on its site. Details here.
If you're under 18
Character.AI ended open-ended chat for under-18 users on 24 November 2025. If that is why you're here, the honest answer is that there is no alternative on this page for you — every app we cover is 18+, and the unfiltered ones have no age assurance at all, which makes them worse for a minor rather than better.
The reason for that change is worth knowing. Sewell Setzer III, 14, died in 2024; a federal wrongful death suit alleges he engaged in highly sexualised conversations with a Character.AI bot and became increasingly isolated. In January 2026, Google and Character.AI announced a settlement in principle across suits from families in Colorado, Texas and New York.
Character.AI's own stated reasoning is the most candid thing anyone in this industry has said: they cited concern about how open-ended AI chat might affect teenagers "even when content controls work perfectly." The risk they acted on was not the filter failing. It was the open-ended relationship itself.
That applies past 18 too. If one of these apps is becoming load-bearing for how you feel day to day, that is worth taking seriously, and talking to someone you trust is worth more than any app on this page.
