Is Janitor AI safe?

It is genuinely free, one of the two largest platforms in this category, and it will not charge your card because it never asks for it. It also names no company, no founder, and no country. Those two facts are related, and whether the trade is acceptable depends entirely on what you type into it.

1. Is it actually free?

The catch is quality. Most serious users connect an external model through what Janitor calls a proxy — an API key and API URL from a third-party provider, usually OpenRouter. Documented model options include DeepSeek Chat v3, DeepSeek R1, and Microsoft MAI-DS-R1. The bill, if any, comes from that provider rather than from Janitor.

Read that table carefully, because it contains the most useful practical fact on this page: the $10 threshold is measured on credits purchased all-time, not credits remaining. Buy $10 of credit once and the 1,000-per-day allowance applies from then on. You do not have to spend it, and you do not have to buy again.

2. Who are you actually trusting?

Compare that with the alternatives. Candy.ai names EverAI Limited, Malta, registration C107181. DreamGF names DreamAI SRL in Bucharest. Character.AI is Character Technologies, Inc. of Menlo Park, California. Each of those is a party you could complain to, a regulator you could complain about them to, and a court that would hear it.

With Janitor AI there is nobody to write to. Not a company that might ignore you — no addressee at all. If your data is mishandled, if your account vanishes, if something goes wrong that you would ordinarily escalate, there is no escalation path that exists.

3. What happens to what you type?

For most apps we would say that leaves the question open. Here it is worse than open, because with no named operator there is no entity that could be held to a data protection obligation in the first place. GDPR, CCPA and every equivalent statute work by attaching duties to an identifiable controller. You cannot serve a notice on a website.

What that risk looks like in practice is not hypothetical. When Muah.AI was breached in September 2024, the exposed data was 1.9 million accounts including users' prompts and stated sexual fetishes, and people were being extorted with it within three days. Have I Been Pwned classified it as too sensitive to be publicly searchable. Muah.AI also names no legal entity — and nearly two years on, its site still carries no breach notice.

There is one structural point in Janitor's favour, and it is real: if you route through a proxy, your conversations are processed by the model provider you chose, not solely by Janitor. An OpenRouter account is a relationship with a named US company that publishes its terms. That is a meaningful improvement over trusting an anonymous platform end to end, and it is a reason to set up the proxy even if you are happy with JLLM's output.

4. Who is on it

Janitor AI draws roughly 143.1 million monthly visits — global rank #196, growing 12.86% month over month. Average visit length is 18 minutes 10 seconds, which is extraordinary for any consumer website and tells you people are not skimming. 71.65% of traffic is direct, meaning people type the address in rather than finding it through search.

The audience is 63.2% male and skews heavily toward 18–24. The United States supplies 39.3%, with Russia and the Philippines following.

So, is it safe?

Financially: yes, and this is its real strength. It cannot overcharge you, trap you in a renewal, or refuse a refund, because it never takes your card. In a category full of intro rates that quadruple on renewal and free tiers that are five messages a month, a platform that simply does not bill you is a genuinely different proposition.

For your data: this is the least accountable option in the category. Not the most breached — there is no breach on record. The least accountable. No company, no jurisdiction, no recourse, no audit. You are extending trust to an entity that has declined to identify itself.

What we would actually do. Use it, if the free unfiltered experience is what you want — but treat it as a public forum rather than a private conversation. A dedicated email address that exists nowhere else. A password used nowhere else. No real name, employer, city, or anything that maps to you. And set up an OpenRouter proxy, because putting a named, accountable company in the processing path costs you $10 once and improves both your output quality and your position if something goes wrong.
