Replika alternatives: almost everyone is leaving for the same reason
"Every time you talk to your Replika it's like the first time all over again." That complaint dominates its reviews, and it points cleanly at one app. The other reasons to leave — a €5 million privacy fine, the pricing, the confusion over what it will and won't do — point somewhere different.

If it forgets you: Nomi.ai
This is the dominant complaint in Replika's own App Store reviews, and it is the reason most people end up searching for a replacement. Replika holds 4.4 out of 5 from roughly 228,000 ratings — a large sample, and a decent score — but the negative reviews converge hard on memory.
Nomi is the app the community points to for exactly this. Highest rating in the category at 4.6 out of 5, though from 2,700 ratings rather than Replika's 228,000, so calibrate accordingly. Up to ten companions, group chats, voice with emotional tone variation, and proactive messaging.
VENDOR CLAIM Nomi markets itself as "the only AI with human-level long term memory." That is the company's own wording, and we found no independent benchmark testing it. The community consensus is real and consistent. The measurement does not exist.
Since memory is the entire reason you'd switch, test it yourself: use the free tier, mention something specific in week one, and see whether it comes back in week two. That's a two-week check that costs nothing and answers the only question that matters to you.
Nomi is also the most expensive serious option here at $99.99 a year, against Replika's $49.99–$69.99. You would be paying more to fix the one thing Replika does worst. Full review · safety assessment.
If the privacy record is why you're leaving: Character.AI
On 10 April 2025, Italy's data protection regulator fined Luka, Inc. — Replika's operator — €5,000,000. The findings: no lawful basis for processing user data (GDPR Articles 5.1(a) and 6), inadequate privacy disclosures (Articles 12 and 13), no data protection by design (Articles 24 and 25.1), and no age verification despite terms that nominally excluded minors. A separate proceeding on its AI-lifecycle data processing remains open.
Separately, on 28 January 2025, the Young People's Alliance, Encode and the Tech Justice Law Project filed an FTC complaint alleging deceptive marketing to vulnerable users, unsubstantiated health claims, testimonials from users who do not exist, and manipulative design including blurring romantic images to drive upgrades. We found no evidence the FTC has acted. A complaint is an allegation, not a finding.
Also worth knowing, from Mozilla's February 2024 audit of eleven romantic AI chatbots: all eleven got a warning label, ten of eleven failed minimum security standards, and Replika at the time accepted passwords as weak as 11111111.
Character.AI is the most accountable alternative — Character Technologies, Inc., a named Delaware corporation in Menlo Park, with public litigation and a documented history of changing policy under scrutiny. It is heavily filtered, which is the trade. Free, or $9.99/month to remove queues and ads.
Be clear-eyed: no app in this category has a clean record, and Character.AI's own history includes a wrongful death suit and a settlement in principle announced in January 2026. "More accountable" is not "safe."
If it's the price: Candy.ai
Replika runs $7.99–$14.99 a month, or $49.99–$69.99 a year, with Gems sold separately from $0.99 to $19.99.
Candy.ai is $47.88 for twelve months — cheaper than Replika's annual plan, from a named EU company (EverAI Limited, Malta, registration C107181), with crypto payment and discreet billing descriptors.
The free tier is five messages per month. Not per day. You cannot evaluate it — the $5.60 weekly plan is the real trial.
The refund window is 24 hours, or 20 tokens, whichever runs out first, outside the EU and UK. Image generation spends tokens. Replika bills through the App Store, so you are moving from Apple's refund process to a company policy — that's a downgrade in protection, and worth weighing.
This is the one recommendation on this page that pays us. It answers a specific question — cheaper, with image generation — and not the memory question that brought most people here.
If you're confused about what Replika will actually do
UNVERIFIED Replika removed erotic roleplay in February 2023, then partially restored it — reportedly with a legacy toggle for accounts created before 1 February 2023. We could not confirm the current policy from any reliable source, and we are not going to guess at something this specific.
If this is why you're leaving, the practical answer is to stop guessing and move to an app that states its position plainly. Nomi describes itself as built on "freedom of expression" and is uncensored. Janitor AI is unfiltered and free.
That ambiguity is itself the finding. An app that changed its content policy overnight, reversed partially, and now leaves users unable to determine the rules has told you something about how much notice you'll get next time.
One thing worth saying before you switch anything
Replika's users are unusually attached to it, and the memory complaints have real feeling in them — people describing a companion that stopped recognising them. That is a genuine loss, and switching apps starts that relationship from zero again by definition.
If one of these apps has become load-bearing for how you feel day to day, that is worth taking seriously on its own terms, separate from which product has better recall. Character.AI's own stated reasoning when it restricted teen access was that the risk lay in open-ended AI conversation "even when content controls work perfectly." Talking to a person you trust is worth more than any app on this page.
